1. Context for the Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy

Although the National Battlefields Commission is not bound by the Federal Sustainable Development Act and is not required to develop a full departmental sustainable development strategy, the National Battlefields Commission adheres to the principles of the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy (FSDS) by implementing the Policy on Green Procurement.

The Policy on Green Procurement supports the Government of Canada’s effort to promote environmental stewardship. In keeping with the objectives of the policy, the National Battlefields Commission supports sustainable development by integrating environmental performance considerations into the procurement decision-making process through the actions described in the “FSDS goal: low-carbon government” table in section 2.

2. Commitments for the National Battlefields Commission

	Improve the use of energy and the energetic efficiency of our buildings/ operations. Departments will use environmental criteria to reduce environmental impacts and ensure best value in government procurement decisions.	Capture rainfall to make use of it on the park.	13.	Starting point: The rainwater contained in a 10,000 L basin was reused by the Green Spaces Unit. Target: Continue to recover rainwater and use the recovered water to ensure a reduction in drinking water consumption of clean water to irrigate the plants and green spaces. Indicator: Number of litters of clean water saved.	Maintenance of infrastructure and security.
		Decrease the water consumption with low flow taps and toilets.	13.	Starting point: The NBC had no low flow plumbing fixtures before 2018. Target: During new constructions replacements, install low flow plumbing fixtures to reduce the quantity of consumed water. Indicator: Quantity of low flow plumbing fixtures used. Starting point: The NBC carried out 246 LED replacements on the 349 street lamps. Target: As soon as the current bulbs cease to function, replace them with LED bulbs whenever possible. Performance measurement : Quantity of street lamps that have been converted to LED.	Maintenance of infrastructure and security.
	Departments will use environmental criteria to reduce environmental impacts and ensure best value in government procurement decisions.	Incorporate environmental considerations into procurement management processes and controls; Ensure that decision makers have the necessary training and awareness to support green procurement; Ensure that key executives include contribution to and support of the Government of Canada's green procurement objectives in their performance evaluations. Raising awareness of staff, suppliers and subcontractors on the concepts of responsible purchasing. Integration of sustainable development criteria in calls for tenders.	12.7	Starting point: The NBC is aware of environmental considerations when purchasing goods; the NBC prioritizes regional purchases and prioritizes the purchase of used products for animation equipment and scenery. Target: When making new purchases, refer to the NBC's Sustainable Development Policy in effect since November 2010. 3. Integrating sustainable development

The National Battlefields Commission will continue to ensure that its decision-making process includes consideration of FSDS goals and targets through its Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) process. A SEA for policy, plan or program proposals includes an analysis of the impacts of the given proposal on the environment, including on FSDS goals and targets.
